Ingredients:
- Dried Green peas - 1 cup
- Onion, small sized - 1 Nos, finely sliced
- Chopped Tomato - ¼ cup
- Green chillies - 2 Nos, sliced
- Turmeric powder - ⅛ Teaspoon
- Garam Masala -½ Teaspoon
- Coconut oil - 1 Tablespoon
- Salt to taste
For Coconut Masala:
- Grated coconut - ½ cup
- Fennel Seeds - ½ Teaspoon
- Shallots - 2 Nos
For Tempering:
- Mustard Seeds - ½ Teaspoon
- Shallots - 2 Nos, sliced
- Curry leaves - 1 sprig
- Coconut Oil - 1 Tablespoon
Instructions:
Initial Preparation:
- Wash and soak the dried green peas for 6-8 hours. Then drain the water and keep the green peas.
- Coarsely grind together the ingredients listed under 'For Coconut Masala' without water. Set aside.
Curry Preparation:
- Heat 1 Tablespoon of coconut oil in a pressure cooker. Add in the sliced onion, green chillies and saute until the onion turns light brown in color.
- Then add in the chopped tomato and saute until the tomatoes are mashed well.
- Add in the turmeric powder, garam masala and fry for 1-2 minutes on low-medium heat.
- Now add in the soaked green peas and mix well.
- Pour enough water, salt and combine well. Pressure cook till the green peas are cooked well( 2-3 whistles, approx:).
- Once the pressure is settled down, open the cooker and add in the prepared coconut paste and combine well.
- Cook for another 5 minutes on medium heat. Remove from heat.
- Heat 1 Tablespoon coconut oil in a pan, splutter mustard seeds.
- Add in the sliced shallots, curry leaves and fry till golden brown.
- Pour it over the green peas curry and mix well.
- Serve warm with palappam, idiyappam, chappathi etc.
